**What are random numbers?**

Random numbers are sequential digits which appear in a random order. There are a number of methods to generate these random numbers and exist in the form of number of tables. However, the probability of selection of random numbers is same as the selecting a random number from a table of random numbers.

The use of random numbers in statistics is crucial. For example, consider the random numbers as stated below:

23, 04, 82, 32, 07, 14, 10, 66, 54, and 72.

Let’s, for example, say that there are about 100 students whose sample of marks of size 10 has to be drawn. In order to do this, the students have to be numbered from 0 to 99. Now by using the number series given above, the marks can be drawn. Say, you want the marks of the student numbered 23, and thus, withdraw the sample in the size of 10. Continue on with the next number, that is 04 and acquire the sample in the size of 10. Keep repeating the process till you obtain your sample of marks.

This set can be used variedly by creating different sets of random numbers in order to obtain sample marks.
