Engineering is, no doubt, one of the most sought after subjects and career fields in this world. Regardless to mention, it can fetch numerous job opportunities for you, provided you do well in your studies. When I was about to join my engineering stream, my father told me – “Either be a good engineer, or don’t be an engineer at all!â€
I understand the meaning of his words now even better. With so many engineers and so many disciplines, the competition is huge and excellence is the only way to assure a great job opportunity.
But, for that you need to make sure that you have right interest in the field that you have chosen. Many people out there often fail to cope with their studies or lose interest in engineering, owing to the wrong choice that they make regarding the discipline. Hence, it is a must that you choose the engineering field that is best for you in today’s world!
Know the streams at first:
Before you proceed on to understanding what is best for you, you need to know the available options at first. Though there are many, here are some of the most popular ones.
- Mechanical
- Computer and software
- Civil
- Electrical
- Chemical
- Electronics and Telecommunication
- Industrial
- Aeronautical
- Marine
- Instrumentation
- Biotechnology
- Mining
- Petrochemical
- Environmental
- Nano
- Systems
- Vehicle
- Manufacturing

How to choose the right engineering field for you?
Now comes the more important part, the selection of the engineering stream. Well, I would like to mention here, streams aren’t that important! Many students or even their parents might disagree with me; but trust me! There is no such thing is this field of engineering is better than the other. All have prospects. And as I have already mentioned, you have to be a good engineer in any field that you choose.
But, what really matters is the choice of the college that you are take the admission to. At the best colleges, you get the best education and this is really important for you to become a great engineer. Still, you have to take the admission to a certain stream and that choice cannot be and shouldn’t be random. Here are a few steps that you need to follow, for a better learning experience.
Step 1: Prioritize your preference:
This is the first thing that you need to consider. If you choose a stream that you do not have much liking for, you will not enjoy your studies and the consequences will be disappointing. Find out and ask yourself, what your hidden interests are.
If you like cars, it should be automobile engineering. If you like to deal with chemicals, you need to chemical engineering. Do you love to spend time with computers? Does wires and electricity intrigue you? It should be computer engineering or electrical engineering.
Step 2: Type of work you like:
Some people like field work, some like to work inside the office, spending hours in the chair. I belong to the first sort and I was quite assured that Civil or Mining is never my forte. You too will have a preference like that. Make the choice wisely, depending on the type of work you would like to do in future.
Step 3: Future aspirations:
Some want to do engineering, but their aim is not working as an engineer. Rather, they prefer a government job, where engineering heads are required. Some might even like to go for the academic field and want to teach the future engineering students. If you too have such aspirations, you need to make a choice accordingly.
Step 4: Further studies:
There are students, who have their aim in mind that they would like to do an MBA or something like that. Quite obviously, there is no special requirement of a good engineering result and career, if you are going to change the subject altogether anyway! Hence, in that case, choosing a subject that will suit your career opportunities more is a better idea.
Step 5: Change the branch:
When I was in my college, I had friends, who switched from one stream to the other, even after taking admission to one. This is normal. There are many students, who do this. Reason? They take admission with a certain idea in mind and when they finally start attending the class, they discover that the stream isn’t like what they actually thought of to be.
There is nothing to be ashamed of. You might find something difficult after starting it. Obviously you didn’t know about it before. Hence, switching is always an option. But, be careful. If you think that the other course would be easier, think again.
Every stream has something difficult and something easy. Just as an accountancy student might find accountancy sums difficult to solve at times, an engineering student might also face troubles. You need to find tips and ideas to make the difficulties easy, just as an accountancy student can find tips to solve accountancy sums easily in the article “Confused with accounting sums? Tips to make it an easier process!â€
Conclusion:
Whatever field you choose, the aim should be to become a good engineer. For that you need to do well in your course, examination and also project and homework. You can always take help, study guidance and professional assistance for clarifying your doubts at any stage of your course. Whether you want to study further or you want to join a job, you need to have good grades.
