Mathematics – the word which many students seem to be phobic to.
When we were kids, even we hated Maths. I still remember the day when I was asked to solve a Math problem in front of the whole class. How nervous I was, almost shivering to death!
However, when we grew up we realized how important the subject is and how it has had a positive impact on our lives.
But is there really a scope to improve in Mathematics?
“Yes†there is. Students initially do not like the subject because of long and confusing calculations. Students seem to be worried about the huge figures which need extensive calculations. But once a child develops aninterest in the subject then it becomes very easy for them. Mathematics is a conceptual subject; the clearer a topic is the more interesting it becomes. Students start enjoying Mathematics once they get a hold of it.
Keep the following points in mind and you are surely going to improve:
- Adopt a practical approach:
Mathematics becomes easy for those who tend to have a practical approach. Math as a subject involves more of practical knowledge and less of theoretical. Teachers need to derive practical methods to teach students and make the subject more interesting.
- Make kids play video games on math concepts:
Parents and teachers should encourage children to play Math related games. Students have a tendency to learn while they play. As it is children love to play video games, so why not incorporate Math games in their daily play module.
- Try to incorporate math in daily lives:
Math as a subject is applicable in daily lives. Students should be encouraged to do simple addition and subtraction problems while doing grocery or payment of bills. The more concepts they apply in practical lives, the stronger their command in Math.
- Make audiovisual clips for children:
Children are also said to learn better through images and audiovisual clips. This is the reason most books for children have illustrations and images. Through audio-visual clips a student’s mind fixes such images in their brains and it becomes easy for them to remember.
- Keep asking questions:
Students need to come out of their comfort zones and ask as many questions as possible. Students should be taught that it is absolutely fine to ask questions. The more questions they ask, the faster their brain works to transform complex problems to simple answers.
- Review class notes:
Students often do not review what is being taught to them. When a student review notes on a daily basis, they are more connected to the lessons and thus becomes easier for them to grasp.
- And finally, “Practice, Practice and more Practiceâ€:
The key to success in Math is PRACTICE. The more a student practices, the better. It is a common saying that practice makes a man perfect. This is indeed true because it has been observed that practice does make a man perfect.
Now let us ponder on some more Math related questions.
Why do students dislike Mathematics?
The answer is because of the lengthy and never ending calculations. Students especially the kids aged 4- 14 years have very little scope of attention. They often lack the focus and concentration to solve a math problem. Students get fed up with the tedious problem solving and learning of tables. Sometimes the fault can be of the teachers as well. Teachers follow the traditional way of teaching, stressing more on memorizing rather than explaining a concept. Thus making the subject more boring.
What is the future scope of the subject?
Mathematics has a wide array of careers to choose from. One can get into an IT firm and combine his Mathematics and Statistics skills to innovate new software. Additionally, a person can join commercial banks and use their mathematics skills to develop new growth models. However, it is a known trend that major Mathematics professionals choose to teach as their career. A Mathematics teacher has a good scope to teach atuniversity or college level. Being a teacher at University not only gives a sense of confidence but also a sense of respect which they earn from their students.
Math is useful in the field of accounts and engineering as well. Engineers have a compulsory Math subject in their curriculum. Also government services require a reasonable study of Math. Any competitive exam, be it entrance tests for universities or government posts, quantitative section would be a must.
What are the benefits of studying Mathematics?
- Mathematics help students to develop complex skills and put them to practice
- Math helps in carrying out the day to day activities of a student
- Studying Math helps the development of your brain’s frontal lobe
- People who are good in Math are always looked up with respect
- Health, medical, life sciences or IT- all these courses require math skills
- It is believed that a person’s brain develops before the age of Thus, Math skills help in the development of the brains
My best friend – MATHEMATICS
Thus keeping the above things in mind, it can be concluded that Math plays an integral part in the development of Human brains. With Math, not only the concentration power in a person increases but also it plays a great role in decision making process. People who have sound knowledge of Math are said to take more informed decisions. It is very important that a student has focus on Math subject as it isinterlinked with other subjects. If a student wants to pursue any professional career be it engineering, doctor, lawyer or research basic math knowledge is mandatory.
