The Art of Reading
With the way technology has developed in today’s times, reading and writing books have almost become unheard of. Gone are the days when finding a good book was something to look forward to and show to your friends.
This obviously does not apply to everyone out there but for the majority, books are no longer a go-to form of entertainment.
But if you are someone who is in the habit of reading books, you will know exactly what people are missing out on. There are just so many good books for college students that are available for cheap, it is unreal that enough people aren’t out there busting their guts out to get them.
There is also a common misconception amongst non-book readers that reading is just another way to pass your time.
That is as far from the truth as it can get. There are numerous books which can inspire and change your life for the better. The positive impact reading a book everyday can have on you is tremendous. As such, try getting into this habit as soon as possible.
Here, we will try and convince you about the positive changes that reading has on your life and which books you may consider reading.
Why It’s Important
From time to time, I get asked this question about why reading is important. Why spend some precious hours of your life which you could have spent doing something ‘productive’ reading about fictional characters?
Once you start to understand why some people are willing to spend thousands of dollars over vintage collection limited edition books, you will not have this question dwelling inside you any longer.
Reading is the most basic task that a person has to do in everyday life. No matter which profession you belong to, this is something that needs to be done. You would be surprised to know how many adults cannot read and write in today’s world. It seems ridiculous but there are plenty who suffer from such a problem.
Filling out applications, reading signs and messages all become more complicated than they should be. It becomes a chore for those who are incapable of this basic task, which should never happen. Even for those who are just learning, it is important to keep reading on a regular basis. While good books for college students are there to fulfill your spiritual needs, educational books are equally important.
Development of the Mind
At the end of the day, your mind is also a sort of a muscle. Like every other muscle in your body, it needs to be trained and worked. Reading helps do exactly that. The more you read, the better you read, sharper your mind becomes. You will find your concentration improving on a regular basis as well.
For kids, reading is vital since it helps them develop their language skills. As much of big deal educational books are sought out to be, simple story books are also equally important for developing the young mind. Learning to read from a tender age can make all the difference in a person’s career.
Increase in Creativity
Another reason why good books for college students are of such utmost importance is because of the effect they have on the person’s creativity. If you think you lack imagination, you should try reading more books. The human mind inherently absorbs everything around it. As such, you will learn a lot from reading the work of others.
The key thing to understand here is that while reading, your mind is always in motion. It is always being pushed and thus, ideas tend to come out more naturally than if you did not read as often. This is something most people will find hard to believe, especially non readers. But once you start getting in the habit, you will understand how all of this works out.
Yet another important aspect of reading is that it helps cultivate knowledge. It doesn’t even have to be informative pieces like newspapers or novels or stuff like that. Even casual reading will make you aware to hundreds if not thousands of facts that you probably were not aware of beforehand. The increase in knowledge after reading books is phenomenal for every person.
But the knowledge itself is not static. You will get to know about tons of different facts related to tons of different fields. You do not necessarily need to memorize all of them when you read, since your memory takes care of that for you. But even the most casual good books for college students can prove to be very informative.
Last but not the least, there is nothing quite like the feeling of coming back late from work and sitting on your sofa sipping coffee with a book in front of you. The reading serves as an extremely efficient form of stress relief, which if you once get addicted to, can be almost impossible to get rid of.
But not to worry! That is actually a positive thing. There is no bad to be done to you if you read books, which is why depending on them for clearing your mind is never a negative to begin with. The fact that you are constantly thinking makes it so that you are never left in a state of mental distraught. A mind that is always on the move is one that is healthy.
5 Books You Must Read
Girl Boss by Sophia Amoruso
Girl Boss tells the story of Sophia Amoruso who is the founder of the online clothing business that goes by the name of ‘Nasty Gal’. It tells about her humble background and how she managed to make it to the top of the fashion industry like a ‘boss’. It is a must read for aspiring entrepreneurs and women who want to become something in this world. It is empowering, inspirational and a must have if you are a dreamer.
Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer
One book that you will always find in any list of good books for college students is ‘Into the Wild’. It is the story about a young man name Chris McCandless who one day decides that enough is enough, burns all his money, leaves everyone behind and heads off into the woods to live the rest of his life. He survives for more than 100 days and finally perishes when he eats something poisonous.
There is also a film based on the same material which is definitely worth a watch. Overall, it plays to the feelings of longing that every individual seems to have at some point of time or the other. It is something everyone feels and is as such extremely inspiring for those struggling with similar feelings.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
There is a good chance that you have already heard of this one, in which case it would not be surprising in the least. It is referenced almost everywhere nowadays from pop culture, to jokes and even TV shows. This piece by Harper Lee focuses on concepts of racism and inequality and how they are very much prevalent in modern society.
Considering the state of today’s world, it is even more relevant now. So for those who have not read this, do give it a shot. As far as good books for college students are concerned, they do not come as better than ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’.
Lolita by VladamirNobokov
Largely polarizing due to its controversial content, Lolita is a novel about a literature professor by the name of HumbertHumbert who seems to be heavily invested in a 12-year-old girl. The term ‘Lolita’ is something he uses privately for that girl; whose real name is Dolores. Eventually, a lot of things transpire and many people have different opinions on the subject matter. But if there is one thing that is for certain, it is that Lolita is one of the finest pieces of literature that exists.
Bluets by Maggie Nelson
Last but not the least, for every college student out there, do yourself a favor and read Bluets. It is mainly about how when you are at rock bottom, the only place you can go is upwards. It explores the ideas of love, of suffering and how you can eventually grind out success even if it is not easy. If you have ever broken up with a woman and feel greatly depressed by it, take some time out and read this piece.
So these are some good books for college students that I would recommend to anyone. There are many more out there, which I will leave to your own discovery. After all, that is what reading is all about after all – discovery. The prospect of finding something truly amazing that no one has heard of before is what drives some people to read anything and everything that come their way.
Even if you do not wish to be that involved in it, just finding something to read from time to time is a good habit to get into.
